What city could be better to host a barbecue competition than Mesquite, Texas – with a flavor all its own.
This year, the Real. Texas. Festival. will host the seventh annual "Taste of Mesquite" Barbecue Cook-off, presented by Mesquite Arena and sanctioned by the Lone Star Barbecue Society. This year, the cook off will have new producers – Mesquite Citizens Police Academy Alumni Association and Mesquite Fire Corps have joined forces to produce the contest for the festival.
Contestants will once again be able to compete for "Cook of the Year" honors, a $500 prize, and the opportunity to advance to National Barbecue Championship in October in Meridian.
Cooks will compete for points toward the coveted Cook of the Year honor, as well as for prizes and awards for champion and reserve champion in three categories – brisket, pork spare ribs and one-half chicken.
And, one contestant will be crowned the grand champion – being able to boast having the best barbecue recipe at the Real. Texas. Festival. The winners in the categories, as well as the grand champion, will earn the right to compete in the national championship.
The competitors in the cook-off won’t have barbecue for sale to the general public, but festival goers are free to stop by and take a look around.
